Makerspace: Literature Connections and Engineering with Young Children

Students in preschool and prekindergarten learned about building and design from some of nature’s most amazing architects: birds! Makerspace teacher and Asst Head of School, Laura McGee often connects activities to pieces of literature. “This week I introduced the students to bird nests with the story, Are You My Mother by PD Eastman.” After listening to the story, the young children examined the bird nests curated by the fourth graders. “I see hair in there!” exclaimed preschooler Maxine. Clara observed, “this one is very sloppy!” Nesting materials were discussed and students were guided to reflect on the nesting choices. One material might provide a soft cushion, but it was hard to find. Sticks might take a long time to weave, but they would be very sturdy. The children will take all of this into consideration before designing their own nest prototypes!
